What is Cupping Treatment (Cupping)?

Cupping Therapy is an ancient medical treatment dating back thousands of years. Ancient Chinese, Koreans, Egyptians and Arabs used cupping as a form of traditional therapy. In Europe, this practice is believed to date back to the Bronze Age, and until the advent of modern surgery, cupping became part of the routine medical practice of doctors in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as well as the United States. In the Far East (China and Korea), Cupping therapy continued to be practiced by both western medicine physicians and traditional medicine physicians. In Turkey, this is called ‘cupping therapy’ or ‘cupping’.

According to the UK Cupping Society (2008), cupping therapy is an ancient medical technique that relies on creating a local skin vacuum to collect blood, followed by a second vacuum through superficial skin incisions to draw a small amount of blood from the skin. There is no relationship between the amount of blood taken and clinical benefit.

Academic interest in cupping therapy has increased rapidly in recent years, and there is growing evidence that cupping therapy can be effective in a range of conditions. The effects of cupping therapy that researchers are particularly interested in are; painful conditions such as migraine, rheumatism, fibromyalgia, arthritis and back pain (Cao et al. 2012). Additionally, there is increasing clinical data on the benefits of cupping therapy for male and female endocrine diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and infertility (Rajput 2015).
